Withernsea Junior School

About Us: Introduction

"Together we Enjoy, Learn, Achieve, Care."

Welcome to Withernsea Junior School. We are a large Junior School of nearly 300 pupils located centrally in Withernsea on a large site with both the Infant School and High as neighbours. We can work closely with both Schools and the Infant and Juniors share a Federated Joint Governing Body.

We have 2 - 3 classes in each Year group, with eleven classes in total in school. Our aim is that all pupils achieve their potential within a high quality learning environment and caring ethos. We have refurbished all our classrooms to a high standard and all have interactive whiteboards to support high quality of learning. We enjoy high quality learning resources with extensive grounds including our large field to support PE and outdoor learning.

We have a very talented teaching and support team staff team who offer the children many different ways to excel and achieve. Our more able children access opportunities such as the digital learning community and can work with more able children in other schools. We can also cater for special educational needs and have a diversity of experience with many different special educational needs.

We encourage the pupils to be involved in their own learning and take responsibility for their own learning. We encourage them to have opinions and take part fully in all aspects of school. There are many opportunities for them to join in including class and school councils, monitors for roles in school, ambassadors, librarians, house captains etc. There are also a variety of committees which children take part in including our eco committee and our global partnership committee. We encourage them to take a pride in their learning and achievements and hold weekly celebration assembles.

We aim to work closely with parents in partnership to support childrens learning. We hold regular consultation evenings which are well attended by up to 90% of our parents. We send home a monthly newsletter and have a home school liaison officer employed for the full school day dedicated to parents and children.

We teach an exciting and enjoyable curriculum, with dedicated literacy, numeracy and science lessons. Art, DT, History and Geography are taught together in themes. We also teach music with Year Four children all having the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. All children can take part in two hours of PE weekly with further opportunities in out of school clubs to extend this. We also teach personal, social, health and citizenship, ICT, RE and French to all year groups.

We also have special theme weeks linked to Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, health weeks, eco weeks, international weeks and book weeks as well as other themes throughout the year.

The school was inspected in 2007 after a period of change and instability where it was judged to be satisfactory. We hope we have made considerable progress since then as we have enjoyed stability with a strong focus on learning.

We enjoy the honour many outside accolades of recognition of our achievements including

Investors in People, Basic Skills Awards, The Healthy School Award and the International School Award.
