Each Year group has a theme for History and Geography which they have taken from the National Curriculum. This is detailed below. We also link our art and design technology to these themes.

We follow the National Curriculum and teach specific facts and knowledge about these topics but we also work on skills relating to these themes- as it is the skills that are important to help acquire future learning rather than just knowledge.

 

 

Skill Development in History

 

Key stage One (ages 5-7years)

Historical enquiry – the ability to find out about the past from a range of sources

-         stories, eye witness accounts, pictures, photos, artefacts, buildings, visits to museums and galleries, ICT.

We also ask and answer questions about the past.

 

In Key Stage Two (ages 7-11)

 

We find out about events, people and changes from a wide range of sources  including

-         documents, CD Roms and the internet, databases, pictures and photos, music, artefacts, historical buildings, museums and galleries.

We ask and answer questions and select and record information relevant to the focus of the enquiry.

We also practise our literacy, numeracy and ICT skills in our learning

 

For example we take digital photos, make databases and use the internet to develop and practise our ICT skills.

We count and order, take measurements eg rainfall, draw graphs and charts, us compasses, look at time zones which develop and practise our numeracy skills.

We draw labels, write newspaper articles, write persuasive texts, descriptive texts and comparative texts which develop and practise our literacy skills.
